Yes, but only in the current trunk of geotools, not in the soon to be 
released 2.2.0.
Simone is know for having worked with mosaics made of hundreds of images.

If images are tiled natively the tiling is used. If the image is too big 
and not tiles, you can use gdal to tile it.

Again, if the image has a native pyramid, yes (you can create one with

but I don't think we're building pyramids in memory. Simone, you surely

I don't think so, but I'm unsure. The geotools and Jump community never 
went well togheter...
I kind of remember at some point OpenJump considered the possibility of 
leveraging geotools but the
reaction of most developers wasn't good?
