I don't remember what the 2.1 API was exactly. It is possible that
Hints.LENIENT_DATUM_SHIFT was not available in 2.1. If you wish to stay with
2.1, than a workaround is to make sure that you CRS definition, if specified as
WKT (Well Known Text) contains a TOWGS84 element. You can search in the EPSG
database what the parameter values are for the CRS you wish to create (or
alternatively, you can remind me what the EPSG code for the CRS you want to
create, and I post you back a WKT including TOWGS84).
