Hi Adrian, I am new to this too so can't help too much other than to say that windows picture/fax viewer opens that file ok.
I am following / trying to follow http://docs.codehaus.org/display/GEOSDOC/Load+NASA+Blue+Marble+Data which describes how to tile and pyramid tiffs, although I have not had success yet.
