Hi Manuele - you should check out the style layer descriptor 
specification - we did not make up Mark, Symbol or External Graphic. 
Instead we went shopping and found all this style stuff in a 
specificaiton published by the open geospatial consortium (OGC).

GeoTools supported SLD 1.0 right now, you can take styles defined in 
GeoTools and write them out as an xml file for other programers.
