I'm currently writing a soon-to-be-open-source mapping component that mobile
developers will be able to embed into their mobile applications for various
platforms, including J2ME, iPhone and Windows Mobile.
Right now, the J2ME version is working great, retrieving tiles from Google,
Yahoo, Microsoft or OpenStreetMaps but I still have one last optimization
problem: all those services use 256x256 tiles by default.
Now I would like to get smaller tiles, something like 64x64 in order to
optimize the network bandwidth of my mobile library and minimize the memory
footprint.
Is there a way to cut tiles on the fly, something like a proxy server that
would get tiles from those services mentioned above, cut them in half,
translate the coordinate system and return smaller tiles? Any other
possibility?
