Hi Leon

WFS-T in the general case would indeed be problematic - in exactly the same way
updates and inserts in SQL have to be done on tables, not views.

That said, the methodology I'm worrying about would probably seek to expose
"atomic" features as well as useful views. In the Observations and Measurements
case, you would be able to insert Observations, but query SamplingFeatures.

WFS-T for a community schema is necessary, but need not be supported for all
Feature Types, GML simpleFeatures Level 1 profile support should eb the target
 IMHO.

As you can tell, we have really started detailed planning on this yet! It woud
be helpful to have your requirements detailed so we could learn from them and
help the prioritisation process.

Subject: Re: [Geotools-gt2-users] complex features in WFS-T

Leon,

as far as I know, community-schemas GeoServer has never been used for
WFS-T (in the six months I have been working on it). I know that some of
the bindings are incomplete and so would not work when updating data.
Some of the community-schemas functionality has problems with WFS, let
alone WFS-T.

Most of the WFS code in community-schemas is a fork of the core WFS, but
there is no guarantee that WFS-T was given much thought when
community-schemas was implemented.

There is also the conceptual problem of how it should behave.
Community-schemas can form properties by performing CQL operations on
one or more fields, for example, a property might be formed by

strConcat(strConcat(strConcat('borehole.', OWNER), '.'), ID)

CQL expression forms are in general non-reversible. How should a
community-schemas WFS-T update be converted into a database update for
these properties?

I will need to consult the originators of community-schemas to see if
WFS-T was ever a supported use:

Rob A? Gabriel?

Kind regards,
Ben.
