I just wanted to follow up that GDAL does support JP2 because I just used gdal_translate to extract a subsection of the same SDE raster. If GDAL is based on the ArcSDE C Api and it supports JP2, doesn't that mean that the ArcSDE Java Api (likely) supports it also? I am crossing my fingers. Thanks again for all the help.
