Hi Nick, it is hard to say what is happening, could you please specify the EPSG code you are using? In general, 2.3.3 is a very old library, and geotools is currently at the 2.5.5 or even 2.6 version of the project. You say that it works on a small number of models, but fails for a higher number. I am no expert, but it seems like some lock associated with the access. I am cc-ing this also to the Geotools list (which is, actually, very helpful ;)).
