Hi Wouter, Sorry, I'm a bit unclear on what you're trying to do. By combine contents do you mean combine several shapefiles into one ? Or merge features within a shapefile ? If you could spell it out a bit more folks here will be able to help.
Regarding the dbf file, you shouldn't need to deal with it explicitly. The whole collection of files (.shp, .dbf, .prj etc) is handled for you by the data store.
