By the way, have you tried osm2pgsql for transferring your road map data into PostGIS ? I think it might be easier than the method that you're using. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Mapnik#osm2pgsql I don't have much experience in this area, but I just tried building the osm2pgsql utility (on mac osx) and using it to import some OSM data into a local PostGIS database. It seemed quite straightforward.
