This effect is (I'm pretty sure) because the bilinear interpolation requires data for neighbouring cells that are beyond the edge of the image. In that sense it's a bit like doing a convolution where you will lose the outermost cells unless you buffer the input image. I'm afraid I don't know what's happening with imagemosaic.
