Andreas, While I haven't worked with GeoTIFF files yet, there's an introductory code snippet on the Geotools Codehaus WIKI at http://docs.codehaus.org/display/GEOTDOC/GeoTIFF+Plugin. That page also references a blog by Jesse Sightler that provides code snippets for getting that GeoTIFF file from memory to a display ( http://www.jroller.com/jsight/entry/back_to_code_geotools_geotiff).
