We best keep questions on the user list.
As for adding and removing attributes; the idea is exactly as simple as you
probably fear.
Create a new shapefile with the attributes you want; and then copy it into
place of the
one you have. When writing out the new shapefile use the data from your
existing one.
The Shp2Shp example shows how to do this sort of thing; specifically the hard
part which is creating
a new FeatureType.
