Wow; why use JMapPane via an AWT_SWT bridge? If you are going to the trouble you can get better performance by asking the renderer to draw into your SWT Image directly.
The JMapPane serves as an example of using the rendering system; have a look at the code and report the background redraw problem you are seeing along with a patch.
