sorry for the late reply but I was away for vacations.

You can get the geoTransformation from the metadata and use that to get the
lower coordinate.
The geoTransformation is similar to the content of a world file [1].
The meaning of the coefficients of the geoTransformation is available at
[2].
You can follow Larry's suggestions by leveraging on these coefficients and
you can also take a look on the BaseGDALGridCoverage2DReader (from
gt-imageio-ext-gdal) class to see how they are used to create a BBox.
