Something in the middle. There's not _supported_ gpx module in geotools AFAIK. 
You should go ahead and resurrect it and become the module maintainer, so that 
there's a supported gpx module in geotools, for the greater benefit of the 
community and yours by having more people to help you out from that same 
community.
Aside: I would advise to use the standard StAX pull/push XML API instead of 
SAX. The pull/push approach proved to be way better for streaming content as it 
puts you in control of the flow instead of passively waiting for the parser's 
call backs, so you can skip content, stop when needed, etc. The XPP pull parser 
I think is an older legacy push/pull parser with an API quite similar to the 
StAX one, which's a standard one.
