Many Thanks Andre. We actually use the shapefile renderer for a custom implementation at our end - not too worried about it being discontinued as our implementation is quite bespoke. I might start to worry a little if the option was removed to enable this within GS. I understand that you won't want to keep legacy configuration code within GS for something that no longer exists, but what is the feasibility of being able to have geoserver configured to a custom renderer as long as it extends GT renderer should be ok and have it declared in the web.xml? Just a thought for maybe a future feature, but of course may be not possible at all.
