Don't worry, I checked that first :-)

The data are actually British National Grid. I've tracked down a suitable prj 
file, named it 'raster.prj' and put it in the same directory as raster.asc but 
still no joy.

Can I just check, if you do "GridFormatFinder.getAvailableFormats()" do you 
also get an empty list?
