Long story short: you're trying to fit a (large) square peg in a round hole.
GML is way more expressive than shp, there is no way a generic GML file can
be turned into a shapefile,
you can do so only if you put rules on the attribute types (no timestamp
support for example), multiplicity,
size (no large strings, no more than one geometry) and so on
