In that case, how does one use an InputStream (rather than File or URL)
as an initialization parameter?

Hello:
Would it be possible to read in GIS data through the Geotools SDK, from
an InputStream rather than a File or URL? If so, are there any clear
examples of this in practice. To clarify, I am thinking of a DataStore
(parent of FileDataStore) returned by a DataStoreFinder (similar to a
FileDataStore), that perhaps takes as input an InputStream rather than
File or URL.
Does not make much sense to use a input stream. A data store is supposed
to be able to answer queries over and over and a stream can only
be read once, so unless you read the contents of the data fully in memory
and serve all subsequent requests from there, you won't be able to get
a working store.
That said, a store can take anything as a initialization parameter,
even a stream
