Hello Levi,

I'm re-directing your question to the user list where there has been
recent discussion about this, including this post:

http://osgeo-org.1803224.n2.nabble.com/gt-swing-module-tc6601383.html

Apologies for the confusion caused by the tutorials not working
properly with either the 8-M1 or 2.7.x versions. This is mostly my
fault while the swing module is being rewritten, as described in the
above post. I'm hoping that the module will be sufficiently stable
again for another milestone release in the next week or so. However
there is no firm timetable for this because it is almost all a spare
time effort. For the same reason, I'm afraid that I'm unlikely to back
port changes or fixes to the 2.7 branch, although I would be happy to
provide advice if any volunteers step up to do that.

To further complicate things for you and other new users, the GeoTools
docs have recently been ported from the old wiki to the new
sphinx-based pages. This was a mammoth effort done almost
single-handedly by Jody Garnett. The actively maintained docs refer to
the development version (GeoTools 8.0) rather than the stable branch
(GeoTools 2.7). Once again, this is because almost all of the work is
a spare time labour of love and we don't have the resources to do
more.

In summary: you are quite right that the docs, tutorials and example
applications should reflect the stable branch and in an ideal world
they would. But in this world they don't at the moment :)

Michael
