Hi Pat, I've just tried that tutorial and it worked for me, although I'm not using Windows.
You don't include the useful bits of the error trace but did it, by any chance, have anything to do with JMapFrame ? If so, the problem is that you currently need to run the tutorials with GeoTools version 8-SNAPSHOT as described here... http://geotoolsnews.blogspot.com/2011/08/current-work-on-gt-swing-module.html If you're getting a different error, please post the full error trace here.
