May it be that Google Earth does not like the particular image compression used? I just opened a RGB tiff file in Google earth without issues, but it was not compressed. Btw, as far as I can see GE is completely ignoring the georeferencing embedded in the TIFF, at that point why bother creating a Geotiff? A PNG would be the same.
