Dumb question: Is the satellite image orthorectified? If not, you'll have a
heck of a time lining up the shapefile...

It is for one instance, but not all. An added complication is that since
most of my views are from a satellite, they don't have full earth
coverage. Is it possible to represent that in Geotools and still render
a shapefile?
