Closing feature iterators is the usually way to keep a stream open accidentally. Interesting that you use the WKT epsg factory. As it is not used in production often I can see why it was not reviewed. If you are interested in volunteering in that capacity it would be great. We need a few complete patches ( with test case) before being able to nominate anyone for commit access.
