I had an issue a while back with geoserver and creating a remote cascading WMS.
I think the issue there was something to do with http credentials not being
used by all of the HTTP libraries that GeoServer/GeoTools may use.
I never managed to make it work. Is this related?
If so, does anyone have a view as to when this will be available in GeoServer?

You need to use the trunk version, which has been released a 8.0-RC1,
the 2.7.x series does not have the pluggable http client support
