I've been reading this but the approach does not seem to fit with the
GeoServer
architecture, if one wants to plug stuff into GeoServer WMS the direction
to go
is to provide data, not to provide pre-rendered stuff.

DirectLayer is not supported in GeoServer, there is no way to feed one in
at the
moment (no hostility towards it, just lack of direction and funding to add
that as
a new extension point).

At best one could create a GridCoverageReader, generate a georeferenced
GridCoverage which holds the pre-rendered stuff, and have GeoServer
treat it like a satellite photo, that is, render it as is, minus eventual
reprojection
