I've to remark that the method disposePlanarImageChain(..) changed in one of the GT versions greater than v2.7.1! The use of this method concerned with the fixed posted earlier works for me with the tested versions gt-coverage-2.7.5 and gt-coverage-8.2, but not with gt-coverage-2.7.1. I've not tested versions inbetween.
However, the difference between those versions clarifies the locking issue.
