Andrea, Thanks for your analysis. You're correct I was using the new FeatureLayer(collection, ...) method. Unfortunately, I do not have access to JIRA to open a ticket. I'm just getting started with trying to build the geotools code and gain the necessary accesses.
However, I did track down the 'offending' documentation that should be revised to reflect the use of the setQuery() method. The 'Things to Try' section of the Query tutorial contains a method called *centerFeatures()*. That method contains the misleading code. Thanks again for your help!
