I have just submitted a patch for this issue which does not break existing unit tests and fixes my blocker problem.
I would be grateful if Michael or Jody could review the patch and comment. Also, can you please let me know best guess on when is the next release planned and whether I can hope this issue would be addressed in that. This would let me help plan my own release. Thanks.
