Cannot be too urgent as you have not signed up and asked on the user list yet :D

Perhaps you would like to start with a running desktop application rather than 
a library like GeoTools? There is nothing automatic about GeoTools as we are 
here to make things possible for those writing desktop applications. 

Or if you are familiar with MapInfo why not stick to that.
