Working with SQLServer+JDBC in the past, I found that you need to enable TCP/IP
network protocol,
which is disabled by default, and set the TCP/IP port to 1433.

Subject: [Geotools-gt2-users] SQLServer and JDBC troubles
Hi,
I am have installed SQL Server 2013 Express edition onto Windows 7 (64-bit) but
I am having trouble connecting to a database using JDBC
I have no trouble installing the installing SQL Server, or connecting to it
using SQL Management Studio. I have created geotools users and databases. All
seems fine.
I cannot connect using JDBC. I have downloaded the driver and installed it into
the Maven repository. I have updated the sqlserver.properties file. When
geotools tries to connect, to run build tests, the connection times out.
I’m unfamiliar with SQL Server administration. It must be something I have
overlooked.
Any suggestions?
