this question is probably better asked on the geoserver list, since it
deals with
the REST API, but yeah, I don't see any reason why this should not be
developed,
it just needs to be resourced:

This will also have a GeoTools side though, right now it's not easy to find
where
the files are before hitting the delete, as from the database we might just
get a relative path (only mosaic knows how to make that path absolute, this
needs to be exposed to the outside caller somehow, the code in GeoServer
cannot have specific knowledge about the mosaic, also because the coverage
readers
have one or more wrappers around them that make them un-recognizable).
