My first thought is that as well at lat/long, you are going to do need the date of the compass reading to successfully convert them to true north. You are going to need a function like true_north = function adjustBearing(compass,lat, lon, date). This is not a simple function. I would be interested to see if someone has created such a thing that could be used with geotools.
