I've seen something similar in the PR checks, with the latest Java 11...
think they have changed something
in font handling, but haven't had time to verify.
The variable you mentioned works from the IDE, from Maven I see this
variable in the pom:
<interactive.image>false</interactive.image>
and then in surefire:

That's what seems to trigger it.
