Often just pointing to a directory if image files is enough to get an image mosaic created. It will create a shapefile "index" by default; and some property files which you can use as a starting point for customization and configuration.
Is there anything special you are trying to accomplish with your image mosaic (sorting, filtering, foot prints) or are you just trying to get a seamless image... The ultimate reference is the test cases; stepping through the test cases with a debugger is a good way to see how the parts fit together.
