Hi there,

My PhD student and I are in the course of other work currently doing some
data collection for Open Street Map to improve the coverage of the area
around our University here in Ireland.

A colleague of ours is interested in getting his hands on this data - well
the entire map of the area - preferably in Shapefile format.

Some searching has us thinking that getting the Open Street Map data in OSM
file format, then using the
osm2pgsql.exe<http://artem.dev.openstreetmap.org/files/osm2pgsql.exe>utility
to convert to PostGIS tables, loading into PostGis, and the export
from here to a shapefile. Most importantly we want to keep the attribute
information - road, street names, river names, etc.

Before we embark on this conversion process - does anyone have any
guidances, tips, howtos etc? Could we consider OSM format to GML?

Currently working in Windows but have no problem with switching over to
Linux if this helps us with usage of various software utilities.

Best wishes and thanks in advance,

Peter Mooney and Blajez Ciepluch
