The whole concept of mobile computing is changing fast. It used to be we had
central server which dished out everything to the mobile units. Currently,
we’re starting to see services from multiple domains, and client side software
picks and chooses data from different sources. However, I’m intrigued by what
I’m seeing on the new iPhones. My coworkers have installed web servers on
their iPhones, not just browsers. Are we getting into the realm where mobile
devices become peers with the servers and with each other? Forgive me if my
thinking is too vague, but something like the iPhone may herald much more than
just a good user interface and a good networking plan. There could be a whole
new paradigm for peer-to-peer computing.

I want to research profoundly on Mobile GIS. I'm applying for a Master
Scholarship in Japan next year. I need your help on a good field of study and
ideas for research plan. It must be an interesting and challenging field of
study to address, solve or clarify important mobile GIS questions. The only
thing that I can think of is a mobile map editor for OpenStreetMap, I want to
make use of open standards. Do you have any idea, advice for me? Your will be
much appreciated.
