FOOD PRODCUTION IN SRI LANKA*

ORGANIZATION: Centre for Coastal Health and Spatial Pattern Analysis and
Research Lab, Department of Geography, University of Victoria

DURATION: 1-2 years

STARTING DATE: September 2010

SALARY: 45K



The Centre for Coastal Health and University of Victoria, Department of
Geography are seeking a post doctoral researcher (or a research assistant
with a Masters and proven record in research) for an IDRC and CIDA funded
project: Social Learning in Rural Aquaculture to Break the Cycle of Poverty,
Food Insecurity, and Unsustainable Practices in Sri Lanka. The successful
applicant will work on issues of *sustainability and food production*,
specifically related to aquaculture, in *Sri Lanka*. The applicant will work
collaboratively with Canadian and Sri Lankian researchers to build capacity
for sustainable aquaculture by characterizing how knowledge on farming
practises is translated to and between farmers.  Specific activities will
include: leading community mapping to characterize social-spatial knowledge
networks, characterizing topology in knowledge networks, and linking
knowledge networks to a sustainability index.  Applicant will gain
experience in areas such as community based research, spatial analysis,
project and research design, determinants of sustainability practises,
international research, and mentoring international and junior colleagues



The preferred candidate will have experience in: spatial analysis (network
analysis and spatially explicit modelling), collaborative and community
based research, sustainability research, and working internationally.
 Salary is 45K per year and will include travel to Sri Lanka. This position
will be supervised by either Dr. Craig Stephen’s (Director of Centre for
Coastal Health) or Dr. Trisalyn Nelson (Director of Spatial Pattern Analysis
and Research Lab, University of Victoria) depending on specific interests
