I've had a Garmin GPSmaps 60CSX for several years and I've found it to be
very versatile and rugged. It locks onto satellite signals quickly, is quite
accurate (even in areas with heavy tree canopy), has many customization
options for recording tracks/waypoints, as well as good interface support.
It's got a MicroSD card in it, so I can store scads of data. Some minor
dislikes: all of the Garmin-supplied support software is either Windows- or
Mac-based (but I more than compensate with GPSBabel and other Linux-based
tools), and it can be inaccurate in urban canyons with very tall buildings.

I use it while traveling and (mostly) for OpenStreetMap mapping parties.
Good luck,
SEJ
