Hi Tom, I'd like to provide a *technical* forum for developers (or people interested in the technical aspect) of geo problems. I feel that there is not such a group/place in the Bay Area and I want to change that.
During Where2.0/Wherecamp, I find myself learning a lot from other people and at the same time helping others with the gis problems they are having. It is a shame that it only happens once a year. If I go to one more meetup/group that is doing a presentation about showing points on top of a Google Maps base layer, I will probably shoot myself. What about the guys that are collecting images using Arduino-based sensors? Or the people that are trying to build iPhone apps that don't use any of the MapKit Layers? Or the developers that are trying to figure out how to build a scalable tracking application?(hint Apache prefork does not cut it). OpenCV experiments with satellite imagery? How do I integrate with ArcGIS? Maybe someone just needs help with Openlayers? Or they are wondering if it is possible to do routing with OSM. NoSQL DBs and geo types? What the hell is SimpleGeo? How do I figure out elevation from a lat lon? Tons of topics and tons of people with different expertise in the Bay Area and yet no place to discuss it.
