Hey folks! Y'all may be interested in this event coming up in SF this week - part of a series - and it's been quite cool so far:
On behalf of the Gray Area Foundation for the Arts (GAFFTA) we would like to invite you and your friends to Summer of Smart's second Urban Innovation Weekend on Sustainability, Transportation, and Energy. More than a single hack-a-thon, San Francisco's Summer of Smart (www.summerofsmart.org) is a new model for how citizens and government can work directly together to address urban issues in new ways. Developers, designers, city officials, urbanists, journalists, community members, and more are building rapid innovation prototypes and presenting them directly to government and the public. It's our vision for Democracy 3.0. During the weekend we'll address questions such as: How can visualizing transit data help provide more effective and sustainable service? How can citizens use technology to engage directly with government on environmental and transportation issues? How can buildings data be leveraged to promote sustainability? How can citizens draft web and mobile applications, policy papers, or legislation which help government promote more sustainable cities? Our first weekend on Community Development and Public Art was a huge success, and we would like to invite you to our second Urban Innovation Weekend, July 22-24, that will focus on Sustainability, Transportation, and Energy. Register now for free: http://sosweekend2.eventbrite.com/ The weekend includes: - Keynote speakers and lightning talks (Waze, MIT's SENSEable City Lab, Rebar Group, The Wigg Party, San Francisco city officials, and more), a meet & greet session, and team formation (Friday evening) - 48 hours to work with members of your community to hack, prototype application ideas, visualize data, or create community projects, policy papers, blog posts and other solutions that will improve San Francisco (Saturday & Sunday); - A presentation session where your ideas and solutions will be showcased (Sunday afternoon); and - A mixer event with drinks and music (Sunday evening). Lastly, the most promising projects will be presented directly to San Francisco's mayoral candidates at our public forum in October, and will have an opportunity to pursue a research residency at GAFFTA. So come join us as we endeavor to build even more transparent, livable, and sustainable city life in San Francisco and beyond.
