if you find yourself bound to using ESRI products out of necessity (e.g.,
people give you funding to do work and they want a common ESRI format b/c
that's what they use - can't really argue with the customer) please
consider "promoting" this up on ESRI's idea web site:

ODBC connectivity for the file geodatabase format is LONG OVERDUE
Even if you don't use ESRI stuff, consider it for the greater good of
those toiling in the same weeds as everyone else
