Mapping for Change (MfC) is a social enterprise, based at University College 
London, which provides mapping, geographical analysis and community engagement 
services for all types of projects and entities. MfC endeavours to empower 
individuals and communities to galvanize positive change to their local area 
through the use of mapping, and the application of geographical information.
 
THE ROLE

The main duties of the role will include, but will not be limited to, the 
development of elements within a new Community Maps platform 
(www.communitymaps.org.uk) using open source and current technologies, with a 
particular focus on front end development for users with a wide variety of 
skills and familiarity with computers and web mapping. In addition, the post 
holder will be required to provide assistance to the organisation with regard 
to technologies that will be used on various projects, perform various IT 
management tasks including the management of Linux servers, and be involved in 
development projects that aim to include people and communities of all kinds in 
the participatory mapping/citizen science process and enable them to use 
mapping technologies to make sustainable transformations to their area.


KEY REQUIREMENTS

The candidate should have experience working as a developer, ideally within 
standards-based projects and of using open source technologies, with a focus on 
front-end development and interface design.
They must have knowledge of up-to-date, open source, spatial and non-spatially 
enabled technologies, such as OpenLayers, Leaflet or Google Maps and will be 
able to quickly adapt to new development environments. The ideal candidate 
should be able to use object-oriented methodologies and tools to analyse, 
design and implement software tools. It is imperative that they are able to 
communicate technically complex information in an understandable way. They will 
also need to have a foundation in structures and standards, properly utilising 
code management systems (such as GitHub), designing robust code in an easily 
extensible way, and ensuring that the viability of solutions extend far beyond 
the lifetime of the projects themselves.

The post is initially a one year contract, with the potential to extend.

Hours: Full time (37.5 hours per week)
Salary: £28,000 – £30,000 depending on experience
