Thanks everyone.

I think I got the info I was looking for. My sense from the replies is that the
OSM z/x/y scheme is the overall winner in terms of number of tiles served. It's
used by Mapbox, OSM, and MapQuest. Yahoo has switched to Noki and they use the
same z/x/y but add in a pixel size for the returned square: z/x/y/p

Also, strongly in the OSM z/x/y court is Github with Mapbox maps underneath.

Is it correct to call it "OSM z/x/y" or is there some more official name for it?

Allan

PS - I did get one off-list response:

The 3 tiling schemes I'm aware of are:

TMS: http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Tile_Map_Service_Specification#TileMap_Diagram
Google Maps:
https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/javascript/maptypes#TileCoordinates
Bing Map Tiles: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb259689.aspx

Also, what's the relative quantity of data/volume of queries satisfied by
either? I.e. what's the overall level of popularity?

And, bonus: are there any other tiling schemes out there?

If you reply to me offlist, I can summarize the responses. If you want your
response anonymized in the summary, be sure to let me know!

Thanks,

Allan
