I figured on far higher resolution, on par of today's digital
cameras. I decided on gearing down stepper motors salvaged from inkjet
printers -- driving the motors via PC parallel port. I figured a webcam
would be appropriate for stiching an image of the scanned area together,
too.

Anyone else interested in that sort of thing?

A few years ago looked at something like this, using some stepper motors and interface card from an educational robot kit thingy. I never got the RF bit (I was trying to detect any radiation, ie wideband - basically to try to capture any RF from TV transmissions to FM radio - too ambitious basically!) working, as also aiming for outdoor photos, and somewhere along the line the project fell by the wayside. Although now we these wideband 'scanner' PC cards now available its a possibilty, just dont have the time for the hardware hacking as much as like now. Including a webcam is a good idea too, was thinking of just post processing aligning it with a photo.
