Hi list,

I think this was discussed recently, but Geowanking archives prior to August can't be browsed! "The requested URL /pipermail/ geowanking/2006-July/subject.html was not found on this server."

What's the simplest way to get lat-lon value from IP addresses? A friend of mine is using Geo::IP (http://search.cpan.org/~tjmather/ Geo-IP-1.27/lib/Geo/IP.pm), but he tells me it doesn't work quite well. If it matters, most of his code is in perl.

I found http://www.hostip.info/ and http://www.geobytes.com/ IpLocator.htm with Google, but wanted advices before going deeper.

Thanks :-)

Last time I looked into geoip, the public data that Geo::IP used was out of date (it even had a warning on the page that it wasn't being updated anymore). So I tried playing around with MaxMind's services.

They do offer a free dataset, but it is not as accurate as their fee based data.

I did some messing around with it just for kicks...

Please report back if you find anything of interest.
