My favorite GPS unit is my Samsung A900 running J2ME software to make it into a handheld GPS.

Nextel phones allow a Java Midlet free access to the GPS APIs but the Sprint phones are much faster with larger, brighter color screens.  To access the GPS APIs on the sprint phones your J2ME code must be signed with a Verisign class 3 code signing certificate which just increased in price tp $500/year.
