Some have started to use the term "RM" instead. I kind of favor "RMF" for "rights management framework". Whether it's a framework, a protocol, or a layer, the idea is to develop common ways of defining and communicating the exchange of intellectual rights in distributed geocomputing.
I tend to think DRM is the perfect acronym for what they are, it's just that the commonly accepted expansion for that acronym is totally misleading. the real meaning of DRM is Digital Restrictions Management, as those things are designed to restrict what one can do with the data.
