I think it's a shame that the files are in a proprietary format, but LizardTech does at least offer a free "MrSID Decode" program that will extract slices from them into JPEG or TIFF format. You can get it from http://www.lizardtech.com/download/dl_options.php? page=tools
There does not appear to be a version for Mac, although there is a browser plug-in at
